Hey photographers! Let’s get real for a minute. Building a newborn photography studio from scratch isn’t easy, but let me tell you—it’s absolutely worth it. If you’re here, chances are you’re dreaming about turning your passion into something more. I’m here to spill the tea on how I went from a camera and a dream to a thriving studio that serves clients I adore.
Humble Beginnings
Back in 2019, it was just me, my camera, a cookie-cutter logo from Etsy, and a Pixieset website. I didn’t have formal training or a big budget. What I did have was determination and a hunger to learn. I dove into every free Facebook group I could find, absorbing knowledge like a sponge. Those early days were scrappy, but they laid the foundation for everything I’ve built since for my future newborn photography studio.
One thing I didn’t do? Pay myself right away. I reinvested nearly everything I made into education and tools to help me grow. Looking back, I wish I’d implemented something like Profit First earlier (seriously, read it if you haven’t!). But every penny I put into my business came back to me tenfold.
Investing in Education
When I say education transformed my business, I mean it. Over the years, I’ve invested $52,140 in my growth—and every dollar has been worth it. Here’s how that journey looked for me:
- Start Small, Grow Big
I began with affordable posing classes from a well-known photographer. These $50 videos taught me the foundational skills I needed to feel confident with clients. Once I nailed the basics, I moved on to in-person workshops, attending 2–4 each year to push myself further. - Find Your Community
Joining paid online groups connected me with other photographers who were navigating the same challenges. The support and feedback were invaluable—and honestly, it’s where some of my best ideas have come from. - The Game-Changer: A Business Coach
The real turning point? Hiring a business coach. Marketing, client experience, website optimization, and social media strategies all started clicking into place. Working with someone who’d walked the path before me was priceless, and I still have a coach to this day.
Building the Studio of My Dreams
By 2022, I’d outgrown my home setup. With a growing client base and a clearer vision for my brand, I opened my 450 sq. ft. studio in Grafton. After a few short months, I realized that was not enough space for me, and now currently am in my dream newborn photography studio in Cedarburg, with a private entrance and 1200sq feet. Suddenly, I had space to create the kind of curated experiences I’d always dreamed of—complete with a massive client closet, cozy spots for parents to relax, and every prop imaginable.
It wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about creating a place where families feel at ease and leave with photos they’ll cherish forever. The studio represents not just an investment in my business, but in the people I serve.
Advice for Aspiring Photographers
If you’re just starting out your newborn photography studio, here’s what I want you to know:
- Invest in Yourself: Whether it’s a $50 class or a business coach, education is key. Don’t be afraid to reinvest in your growth.
- Learn the Business Side: Posing and editing are just one piece of the puzzle. Mastering marketing, client experience, and pricing will set you apart.
- Be Patient: Success doesn’t happen overnight. Take small steps, stay consistent, and celebrate the wins—no matter how small.
